NOTES lets get this session started~ | LET THE RAIN OF WHAT I FEEL RIGHT NOW, COME DOWN. It was the much hyped 'game of the year', and even the usually cool and collected James was perilously close to skipping around his room in anticipation as he waited for it to install onto his laptop. It was sad, but this was probably as much fun as the teenager ever had- and he was really looking forward to making the most of it. And to make it even better, he even had a week's worth of holiday's from school; and he fully intended to use them to play the game till he couldn't keep his eyes open.
Humming idly as he glanced at the installation, cruising along at 70%, and then logged on to Pesterchum to finalize with the plan with his server player and one of his only friends- Lennart aka napalmOcelot.
SO: i've got the game and i'm letting it install C: SO: hbu?? ur gonna be my server player right?
Another glance showed him that it had reached the nineties, text flashing with all sort of vague and suggestive phrases like 'Managing Elbows' and 'Achieving Aluminum Trowels'. Anticipation now peaking, James gave Lennert the update.
SO: almost done now~ how's your progress? SO: and what's ur ip address again??
There would probably more people joining in soon enough, but it didn't mean they couldn't start now. 100%. Hell, fucking, yes.

{Show Post} Lennart Ignatz let out an impatient sigh as he stared at the screen of his laptop. After buying the game and arranging to play with one of his only friends, James Alvey, he'd started to install it... only to discover that his nearly-ancient computer was installing at a rate of approximately 2% per minute.
The wild yet friendly snake that lived in his room had decided to slither on top of his desk. "Can you believe this, Rust?" Len asked her in a somewhat-incredulous tone. "This thing isn't going to finish installing until I'm eighty."
He rose from his chair and began to pace restlessly, but stopped when he heard a small ping. Glancing at the computer again, he noticed Pesterchum blinking. Lennart sat back down, clicked the application, and skimmed the message.
NO: Yeah, I'll be your server player. NO: My laptop's taking forever to install the game, though. NO: Only at 46% right now.
He had to look up his IP, since he didn't know it off the top of his head. Highlighting and copying the address, he pasted it into the chat window.
NO: 40.155.135.207
Minimizing Pesterchum, he opened the game's installation window again. 52%. Lennart gave a loud sigh, stood up again, and sat down on the edge of his bed. The laptop's fan was running at hyperspeed; he wasn't entirely sure that it wouldn't overheat before the installation was finished.

NOTES --- | LET THE RAIN OF WHAT I FEEL RIGHT NOW, COME DOWN. Even though SBURB had been installed, it looked like he would have to wait on Lennart's laptop before commencing on the week-long gaming binge. Deciding to pass time by chatting until Lennart's slow and crotchety laptop took mercy on the two of them; James started pestering his friend.
SO: we'll just have to wait for a bit i guess ^^ SO: hopefully the game will run without any problems.
Now that would really suck. He hadn't stood in line for half a dozen hours just to be shot down at this final hurdle.
SO: you have any idea what this game is about? all i heard was something about a fully immersive experience and massive control over the main campaign.
Softly humming, James found his favorite playlist and let it air through his laptop's speakers. That done, he resumed his intense scrutiny of the screen- waiting for Lennart's IP to show up among the long list of available addresses.
SO: btw my IP is 10.541.261

{Show Post} The eighteen year old boy laid back against his pillow as he listened to the whine of the computer's ventilation system. He could barely hear the Pesterchum notification now, and made a mental note to turn up the volume on his speakers later. Ping, ping... then a short pause, during which Lennart assumed that his friend was either thinking or typing a particularly long message. Soon enough, there came a third ping, followed by a fourth. This last one was lost in the din of the fan.
The cobalt-colored text probably didn't require his immediate attention. To pass the time while Sburb installed, Lennart grabbed a misplaced ping-pong ball from his bedside table. He tossed it idly from hand to hand while staring at the ceiling. It was several minutes before he finally crossed the room and stooped over to check the laptop.
Installation was actually moving along now. About time; he didn't think that it would be done within the hour. Rust gave a quiet hiss as Len clicked back onto Pesterchum.
NO: I'm just chilling here while I wait. 72% now. NO: I don't think there will be any problems once it actually starts, though. At least... I really hope not. My computer usually doesn't crash or anything; it only runs super slow. NO: To be honest, I hardly looked at the game until I'd brought it home. Whatever it's actually about is a mystery to me. Guess we'll find out?
He reached for a sticky note and scribbled down his friend's IP address in black ink, just in case. Lennart was awful about remembering numbers. He didn't want to have to ask for it again if he somehow lost it.
Opening the installation window again, he saw that the game was actually almost set up. The blonde boy grinned faintly. He watched the flickering icon and the swiftly-changing words underneath for a few seconds. Stepping over to the small window, Len cracked it open for some fresh air while he lit up a cigarette. A rather unfortunate habit of his... but he'd never been the most health-conscious person.
His back had started to ache a bit from all of the leaning over, so he plopped himself down in his computer chair. It looked like Sburb was fully installed now. Lennart's green gaze shifted from the laptop screen to the sticky note with the IP and back. There sure was a long list of clients to connect to. He clicked on James' address, then on Pesterchum.
NO: Done installing. I think it sent you an invite or something to confirm?

NOTES feel free to mess around with his room and stuff ^^ let the sburbian shenanigans begin!~ | LET THE RAIN OF WHAT I FEEL RIGHT NOW, COME DOWN. Installing seemed to be going faster over at Lennart's end, but a short (at the very least) wait was still before James could start playing SBURB in earnest. Talking to his friend was out of the question- he'd already exhausted his meager supply of small talk- so instead James wandered out of his room and in the search of snacks to sustain him through his gaming spree.
He was still humming softly as he came back into the room, his sylladex filled to the brim with enough caffeine and sugar to last him the week- and put out his heart. His attention was immediately drawn to the laptop; where a new message awaited him and the SBURB icon was blinking with some urgency. It looked like Lennart was finally good to go.
SO: yup, i see it; gimme a sec.
Quickly confirming against the IP address sent to him earlier, James clicked the okay button and waited for the game to get underway. And kept on waiting. Perhaps he should have installed the other CD too?
SO: is the game working on you end? i'm not quite sure what i'm supposed to be seeing here...

{Show Post} Lennart's fingertips drummed on the desk while he watched Pesterchum. A puff of smoke rose from the tip of the cigarette. Rust gazed at it for a moment and then slithered away, vanishing a few seconds later. As he'd learned earlier, the snake wasn't a huge fan of cigarette stench.
A new line of blue text flashed onto his screen. It looked like James was back from whatever had been distracting him. A fresh wave of anticipation flooded Len when he clicked over to Sburb. There was nothing for a few more heartbeats... and then James must have confirmed the connection, because the blond boy was suddenly staring at his friend's room.
He dropped his cigarette in shock, nearly setting his t-shirt on fire as he fumbled to grab it. A few small singed holes now marred the black fabric. Tossing the squished cig into an ashtray and making sure that his shirt was not going to burst into flame, Lennart returned his attention to his laptop.
It was still hard to believe what he was seeing. This was James' room, right? Lennart could see a black-haired teen sitting in front of a computer. Clicking on James revealed nothing - unless you counted the fact that it was apparently impossible to directly interact with the client. Hesitantly, Len tried clicking on something else - a bed in one corner of the dark green room.
To his amazement, it seemed like his cursor had picked up the object. Len tapped the center of the room, which appeared to be mostly empty, and the bed fell to the floor. Marveling at this, Lennart brought Pesterchum back up.
NO: It's working, I think... NO: I can see your room - at least, I think it's your room. And it seems like I can interact with stuff inside of it?
Torn between fascination with the game that could influence the real world and confusion with what was happening, he returned to the Sburb window. Upon closer inspection, he could see a bunch of strange icons with numbers next to them, which appeared to be part of the game interface. Maybe they were some sort of currency? There were also small pictures of foreign mechanical-looking objects along the top of his screen. Lennart clicked on one of them, the cruxtruder, and placed it in the corner where his friend's bed had originally been. The numbers did not change; apparently this object was free.
NO: I just put down one of the weird machines from my control panel. Can you see it?

NOTES it's the final countdown //shot. feel free to deploy all the other machines around the house ^^ | LET THE RAIN OF WHAT I FEEL RIGHT NOW, COME DOWN. There had been some sort of problem, some sort of glitch, or maybe he had just been given a defunct game- but there was a distinct lack of things to do in SBURB. If the game had begun at all. Unsure whether he was doing something wrong or not, James started fiddling around with the settings of his game and laptop- oblivious to the levitating bed in the background. In fact, he might have missed it completely if it wasn't for a stray beam of light that allowed his screen to reflect and show exactly what was going on behind his back.
"Holy shit; my bed's been possessed." James muttered to himself, uneasily wondering exactly what the vengeful spirit that possessed his bed was up to.
And then, as suddenly as it had started its strange journey, the bed dropped down to the center of his room- leaving a mark on its landing.
The teenager might have taken a closer look at it, but before he could do so he was distracted by the Pesterchum acting up. The details the chat supplied didn't help his confusion either; supplying three questions for every one that was answered.
SO: thanks for the warning, but next time could you send it before messing around with my room? SO: it took a while for me to arrange it just right you know =P SO: but yeah; it's my room alright. which is just crazy. don't suppose you have any idea on how a game is making this happen?
Unfortunately, Lennart was not quite done with experimenting, as he would soon go ahead and deploy a machine straight out of sci-fi novel in the recently vacated corner of James's room.
SO: okay wait. this is scary and crazy awesome in equal amounts. SO: but let's be careful when messing around please. SO: my dad shoots people for a living after all ^^"
Having cautioned his friend, James tore his gaze off the laptop and gave the machine a closer look-over. There was a lid of sorts on top of the pipe/chimney that rose from the thick platform, but more intriguing was the wheel attached to the side which was just begging to be turned.
SO: hang on i'm gonna give this wheel a turn or two. see what happens. SO: oh and kindly avoid rearranging my room's furniture from now on, the study next door is pretty roomy.
That said, he gave the wheel a few turns. It was trying to push something out of the chimney, but of course the lid was in the way. James pushed harder, but since he was making very little progress he returned to his laptop and consulted Lennart.
SO: the lid needs to go, mind lending a hand?

NO: Remove that stupid lid. |
{Show Post} Lennart decided that switching between the Sburb and Pesterchum windows was going to get super annoying, and fast. He spent a moment rearranging them so that both could be shown at the same time, despite the fact that the game window would have to be somewhat smaller. James seemed sufficiently weirded out on his screen. Oops.
NO: Yeeeaah... sorry. NO: I didn't think that I'd actually be able to affect anything., but apparently I can. NO: I dunno, man. This is just completely strange. When you said Sburb would be a 'totally immersive experience', this definitely was not what I pictured.
He pinched the bridge of his nose, somewhat comforted by the fact that James' father couldn't shoot him from there. Or was he even at home? The rest of James' house was obscured from view. He hazarded a guess that he might not be able to see it unless his client walked over there. Len himself was home alone, unless you counted Rust. His grandmother had gone off to the store a while ago.
James was now examining the strange machine that Lennart had deployed before. The blond watched as he attempted to turn the wheel, but nothing was happening. Several seconds later, James returned to his computer and a new line of cobalt text appeared on Pesterchum.
NO: I'll see what I can do. NO: And I can't see the study yet. After you figure out that machine, try going next door?
He clicked on the machine, but there was a small electronic denial noise. The numbers in the screen's corner flashed. Maybe he didn't have enough in-game money to lift up the cruxtruder? Well, that meant he'd have to do something else to bust off the lid on that thing. After a quick examination of his friend's room, Lennart noticed a huge book sticking off one of the many shelves in the room.
He lifted the book into the air with a tap on his mouse. Len noticed that this action appeared to use up a small amount of his grist; moving the bed earlier had presumably deducted a fair sum, but he hadn't noticed that. The thick tome hovered across the room as if it was being carried by some invisible force. Then, carefully positioning the book near the chimney-like protrusion, he sent it flying sideways. Loose pages scattered everywhere, but the lid had been removed by the impact...

NOTES gonna prototype a turtle .___. btw you can zoom out, rose could see and access all of john's house easily ^^ | LET THE RAIN OF WHAT I FEEL RIGHT NOW, COME DOWN. Mollified by his friend's apology, James tried to decide on what was the next course of action. It was safe to say that the two of them had no idea on what they were supposed to do. There was no tutorial that could be found, no walkthrough available- hell; he still didn't quite understand what this game was supposed to be about!
He should probably write down whatever they were doing, just to keep track and find any patterns that they'd missed, if nothing else.
SO: i'm going to write down all of the steps taken, see if we can figure out what we're supposed to be doing here.
That said, he opened a new MS Word document and quickly noted down whatever little progress they'd made so far, and all the steps they had taken to get there. That done, he grabbed his phone and moved over to the study; intending to give Lennart a clear view of that area and clear some space for any further deployment of machines. It wasn't too hard, the large desk which dominated the center of the room was quickly shoved away to one corner, freeing up a ton of space. In doing so though, he accidentally bumped into one of the cupboards, and had to move fast in order to prevent a polished turtle shell from falling to the floor.
"Close call." he muttered to himself. That turtle shell had once belonged to the family pet, Darwin, who had lasted all the way from his great-grandfather to four years back when it had choked on some lettuce.
SO: okay, the study is open for business. if needed there should also be some more space in the basement ^__^ SO: what's the progress on the pipe-thingy?
Just as he typed out the query though, he heard a loud bang come from his room, which sent James sprinting back. The first thing that caught his gaze was one of his precious books lying on the floor, pages scattered about, and any other day that would have disturbed him significantly. But right now his mind was occupied by what had come out on the removal of the lid. A cobalt colored, spirograph/orb was levitating about and the timers attached to the cruxtruder had started counting down, currently reading '29:18'.
SO: ... SO: ...riiiiight SO: perhaps the countdown is until another one of those orbs is released? or maybe until this one vanishes? SO: i think the latter's more likely actually, but let me get a closer look. SO: what's the orb even supposed to be about really?
Putting aside the turtle shell, which he had brought along in his hurry, James took a closer look at the orb and at the cruxtruder. The orb darted away from him, but the cruxtruder (naturally) stayed put. So now, with the lid out of the way, James decided to continue his investigation where he had left off last time. He turned the wheel swiftly and sure enough, its payload was delivered; shooting out in the form of a cylindrical, cobalt object which was dodged by the orb, and would go on to hit the wall.
SO: another thing which's use i have absolutely no idea about. SO: okay, throw more devices at me until something sticks.
He decided to leave the orb for later, when he would have a better grasp of the game's mechanics. Or maybe he'd just come back to it when the countdown was a bit more threatening. Either way it wasn't really too urgent; it was just a game right?

NO: Deploy that other stuff. |
{Show Post} Well, James probably had the right idea. With all sorts of weird stuff going on, keeping a record sounded like a good thing to do. It only took a short while for Lennart's friend to do that, and then he was off to the study.
The blond stared in amazement at his screen when he got his first glimpse of the room. It was very spacious; most of Len's tiny house could have probably fit inside. There were other things to deploy, and although he wasn't sure how big they were, he had no doubts that they could be placed here with plenty of room to spare.
Of course, now James was busy investigating the cruxtruder. Lennart squinted; he could see some sort of floating spherical thing that reminded him of the installation screen. It appeared to almost be alive. As he looked closer, he also spotted something like a digital clock on the machine.
NO: Wait, that's a countdown? I can't see it very well. Stupid laptop screen is too small. NO: For some reason, I don't like the sound of that though. NO: No answer on the orb. But hey, when in doubt, poke the weird thing with a stick. Right?
Len's client was now back to messing with the machine, which spat a solid-looking hunk of blue material out of its chimney. What a weird game.
NO: Yeah, I'm gonna place the rest of the stuff that looks like it's free. Check the study in a few minutes. In the meantime, see if you can try to figure out the things that came out of the first machine?
He promptly scrolled back over to the study. Yeah, there was definitely more than enough space to work with here. Lennart clicked hesitantly on the next machine-type object. After selecting a location in front of some more shelves, he set down the totem lathe - which was long, but didn't come close to taking up the entire room. At least it was rather narrow. Next came another machine, this one even larger. He decided to place it in the very middle of the room. There was still enough space to move around it, amazingly; Len stifled a pang of jealousy. He wished he had this sort of square footage in his own home.
Only one free object left to go. This one was a captchalogue card with some rectangular holes in it. Len put this on the floor near the doorway that connected the study to James' room, so that it wouldn't be overlooked.
NO: That should be everything that I can place for free. Two more machines and one card.

NOTES - - - | LET THE RAIN OF WHAT I FEEL RIGHT NOW, COME DOWN. Before moving on, James decided to quickly update his notes, quickly writing down the details of a cruxtruder and the result of removing its lid. That done he cast an apprehensive glance towards the countdown, it had gone below the twenty minute mark now, before deciding that a detailed examination of what the cruxtruder had given to him might not be that bad an idea.
SO: yeah it's a countdown alright; currently ticking past 19 minutes or so. SO: sorta ominous really, maybe i should hurry up a bit, just in case.
A small, yet terrifying thought, was slowly making its way through James's mind. With SBURB affecting the physical plane as it did; what would be the result of losing, or even game over?
With real haste now the teenager moved on to the cylinder. Finding nothing worth of special mention on a closer look, he captchalogued it and started examining the spirograph instead. Lennart had mentioned poking it with a stick, and wary of physical contact with an unknown material, James decided to make contact with the toughest thing he had at hand; the turtle shell. Naturally something went wrong. A flash blinded him for a minute, and when the light subsided...
SO: ... SO: leo what are your thoughts on tmnt? SO: btw don't poke the orb with a stick, i think it transforms into whatever it touches first.
Friend duly warned, James went over to the study to see what further machines did he have to work with. The first thing that caught his eye though, was a captchalogue card with several holes in it and the image of a slice of cake on it.
SO: and now a mutilated card. SO: probably something to do with the new machines. any idea of what they do?

NO: Start to feel worried. |
{Show Post} The most recent cobalt-colored messages caused Lennart to furrow his brow in concern. So it was a countdown. He reached for his phone and set the timer to 19 minutes, just so that he'd have some idea of when it would reach zero.
NO: Yeah, that doesn't sound good at all. I wonder if we can get it to stop ticking? NO: Or for that matter, I wish I knew what's supposed to happen if it runs out of time. NO: If this game can influence reality... I get the feeling that taking our time is a bad idea.
He was starting to feel stressed, so he lit a new cigarette. Hopefully there wouldn't be any major surprises in store within the next few minutes. Len didn't really feel like burning more holes in his clothes by accident.
With raised eyebrows, the blond observed while his friend poked around with the things that had come from the cruxtruder. He nodded as the cylinder was captchalogued; chances were that it would be important for something. Then James poked the floating orb with something that looked a lot like a turtle's shell. There was a blinding flash of light, and suddenly a strange ghost-like creature was hovering where the spirograph had been.
NO: Whoa, so it's alive! Does it speak or anything? NO: I mean, I was never too big on TV shows, but that looks cool. Whatever it is.
He had to wonder what would've happened if the cruxtruder's orb had actually been poked with a stick. Would it have turned into a tree spirit? Furthermore, could this creature transform again if it was touched by something else? Maybe it was like a sort of chameleon that took on the form of whatever it came into contact with, instead of just the color.
Now James was investigating the study and its new furnishings. Lennart glanced at the three machines. He wasn't really sure what the newer two would do. But given that the first machine had produced the cylinder and the sprite, maybe those two things could be affected by the other machines?
NO: Our only lead seems to be that cylinder. Well, and the card. NO: See if you can use them with those new machines?
Time was still ticking away, and Len didn't like it at all. He silently willed James to figure out something soon.

NOTES approaching entry now... | LET THE RAIN OF WHAT I FEEL RIGHT NOW, COME DOWN. James didn't know whether it was just him or not; but by the tone of his messages, Len seemed sort of worried. And now that worry was creeping up on James too.
"Gotta get my head in the game." he muttered to himself, only to jump in surprise as the turtle-ghost started babbling in reply, speaking absolutely nothing understandable.
SO: turtle-ghost talks alright, unfortunately i need to brush up on my turtle before i can understand him =P
He could tell though, that it seemed particularly upset over the timer on the cruxtruder- which had exactly 10 minutes and counting remaining. A but flustered now, James took a few deep breaths, ruffled his hair and adjusted his glasses- managing to center himself by doing so. The latest batch of advice from his friend was also pretty helpful.
SO: i'll tackle the smaller one first ^^
Carefully stepping around the larger machine, James proceeded to give it a close examination. It took a fair bit of time, interspersed with nervous glances at his phone watch, before he found something promising. A slot for a thin, narrow object, like a sheet of paper or a captchalogue card. Quickly James fitted in the captchalogue card and watched as sharp, knife like extensions poked out from near the top of the device. They probably corresponded to the card, or even the design punched on it, but other than showing up, they weren't really doing anything. They needed something to work on... A pattern rapidly becoming evident, James retrieved the cylinder and managed to attach it to a place in the Carver (as he had labelled it) and watched with satisfaction as it carved the cylinder into a 'totem'.
Now to see how what he just did, corresponded with what the next machine could do... Before he could move on though, a text message stopped him and left him thoroughly shaken.
SO: len...what do you know about meteorites sighted in my general area?
3 minutes to go.

NO: Look up some game guides. |
{Show Post} Lennart shot a glance at the timer on his phone. Apparently only half of the original twenty-minute time span remained. He frowned and let a puff of smoke rise up to drift around the ceiling. Movement on his leg told him that Rust was slithering around under his desk.
It was too bad that the turtle-ghost didn't speak English; he would've loved to figure out what its deal was. With a sigh, Len opened his internet browser and searched up a walkthrough for Sburb. It really wasn't very well-written, but it did provide some useful information as he skimmed it.
NO: I found a guide online. NO: After you get the "cruxite" from the "cruxtruder", you put that pre-punched card into the "totem lathe" and it carves the cruxite for you?
He glanced back at the Sburb window and smiled. James seemed to have already figured that part out on his own, as a carved totem was now on the totem lathe.
NO: Looks like you've already got that done, though. NO: The guide says that you're supposed to put that totem on the machine with the platform - the alchemiter - and it'll create an item for you.
Lennart hesitated when he saw James' mention of meteorites. There had been something about that in the online guides as well, rushed as they were.
NO: I haven't heard of any, but... it looks like the meteorites may somehow be related to Sburb. I'm not really sure. NO: Did you see one in the sky or something?

WORD COUNT 000
TAGGED @lennart
NOTES prospect of unavoidable death has weirded james out =P would you like the honor of the last post? | LET THE RAIN OF WHAT I FEEL RIGHT NOW, COME DOWN. There was a game guide. Wow, okay, he'd really have appreciated that information before he made a long dead family pet come back to life. Or before his whole bedroom was rearranged, or before he even bought the freaking game.
It was pretty obvious that, despite his efforts, James had proceeded to well and truly freak out. The reason? A large meteor which had been sighted, heading somewhere a bit too close to his general vicinity. To be fair; Armageddon being reenacted in one's backyard would trouble pretty much anybody.
So it was excusable that James first typed out a hurried and panicky text to his father before rushing out to get his telescope and run to the roof, placing the totem in the alchemiter only as an afterthought. It was also the reason he wasn't around to see an oven appear with a timer for 30 seconds ticking. Hell, he'd even forgotten his phone behind in his rush.
Less than two minutes remained on the clock...
The evidence from his telescope didn't help either. The meteor was close, close enough for him to see it with his naked eyes, and it was headed straight for him. Incineration; eminent and unavoidable. Shit.
His hand went to his pocket, looking for his phone so he could send off a few dramatic and cliche 'last words' and it came up empty. Right, it should be back in the study. With the urgency removed from his movements, James went back to the study- with his attention immediately drawn towards the oven. The timer had gone off, and the door had opened to reveal a perfect slice of strawberry cheesecake. The turtle ghost seemed to be babbling with great alarm by it. Poor fellow had just been revived only to appear in the path of a hunk of rock the size of a skyscraper falling at a few hundred miles per hour.
SO: meteor heading towards me. SO: ttyl? SO: :C
He hadn't even bothered to read Lennart's messages, but that could be excused with his current state of mind. Finally resigned to his fate, James shrugged as non-nonchalantly as he could manage and finally took a bite out of his 'last meal'.
He made it with three seconds to spare.
