drawn film and other entertainment had finally flourished under gene's parents' influence. they'd bought out almost all rival companies and had their customers and investors eating out of their hands. and while this meant that they lived lavish and comfortable lives, it also meant that as joint ceos of the company they didn't have much spare time. or at least, not enough to keep themselves happy and a kid in check. but they had just the solution to this problem. this solution was to ship gene off to boarding school as soon as she was eligible. the then young girl had a whole five years with her parents, or more accurately with a variety of nannies and caretakers, before she was sent to the prestigious pinecrossing academy. here she would spend the majority of her life. from the time she could apply to their first grade courses to the time she would graduate high school, this place would be her home. the first few years were really hard on gene. at first she had been comforted by the idea that she was simply here to learn, and that when there was time off she would be sent back home to hopefully snatch a few minutes of time from her parents for a hug, a kiss, or a dinner. but, when the free days came and everyone else left, gene found herself virtually alone at the school. it was during these early years that she became acquainted with madame mable, pinecrossing's supervisor for the girls' dorm rooms. she would comfort the crying and heartbroken gene, and while it's still not something she finds easy to admit, would become the closest thing to a mother gene's ever known. after the first couple of years of school gene came to the conclusion that her parents were not satisfied with her. they left her at school because she did not meet their standards and needed to grow and learn so that she would. as a result she threw herself into schooling. she became fiercely motivated and organized. no item was unaccounted for and no assignment was left incomplete. she became obsessed with grades and impressions, and the early signs of complexes that would develop later showed themselves. she had everything cataloged and scheduled so that she'd get all her work done, and she kept all her clothes (and of course herself) clean and neat so that no one would ever see her as less than impeccable. it didn't work. even after several years of straight a's and ironed uniforms her parents still didn't so much as write. as she neared her middle school years she decided to take another approach. she changed herself. cut her hair, stopped wearing skirts, and began to forsake the gaudy and flahy. she took up a much more modest and reserved personality, or at least did her best to project one. it did nothing to help her, but in the end the look on its own managed to stick, with aspects of the adopted attitude clinging to her a she got older. it was during these years that she finally accepted the fact that he parents simply didn't seem to want her, and it filled her with new loneliness that would make her clingy and wanting for any kind of attention she could garner. a wanting for attention and affection would lead to a lot of ill advised romances and several bad incidents as gene grew older. it became very easy to make her jealous, and when that was coupled with the way she changed demeanor so dynamically with her emotions, it became harder to make friends and form bonds. in the end she became more lonely, and found herself putting more and more time into her routines and schedules. it was during this time that her various obsessions with grades and her appearance -- habits that had stuck with her since adolescence -- became truly compulsive. her wish for her parents warped in her mind so that she believed that breaking her routines or being uncleanly would result in them never looking her way for the rest of her life. and despite madame mable's insistence that her actions were unhealthy she refused to change. in mid highschool she would finally find an activity to calm her nerves. photography. joining the journalism department gave her a few mild friendships to lean on and the chance to take pictures. she quickly fell in love with the activity, and found that it helped her take the edge off of her anxieties. she also embraced the fact that it allowed her to save memories nigh permanently. a picture with a friend could last long after the friendship itself died, and she loved the idea of it. taking pictures became another compulsion, and she filled album after album with photos depicting her days at the academy. gene also began using the internet more in highschool, downloading pesterchum and creating an account so that maybe she could make some friends online. friends that wouldn't leave her during the long breaks. she sent many pictures over the internet, taking any praise or recognition those she met over it had to offer. it helped her get the attention she'd been wanting, and she reveled in every bit of it. when sburb was announced she was excited to pick it up. the beta showed her a way that she could see and interact with those friends she'd met, and she couldn't wait to try it out. when it finally came out she was quick to order it, and waited anxiously for its arrival. once it arrived she was quick to search for anyone willing to play with her. sending out pesters to all those she knew, and some she didn't. | [attr="class","kangaroo"]HOME [attr="class","kangaroos2"]gene lives in the boarding school she's been attending since childhood. it's a decently large school, being supported by a lot of donations and the high tuition every student has to pay. her long time spent there means her parents have never really functioned as her guardians. instead she is cared for and ordered around by the supervisor of the girls' dorm building, madame mable. mable is generally a fairly kind woman, she looks after all the girls who stay at the school, and has spent even more time with gene on account of the fact that she stays there for all holidays and breaks. they have a very dynamic relationship as a result. they can be fine one day and screaming at one another the next, especially over breaks where gene feels the most loneliness as she spends them on a more or less empty floor. in the end though, mable is her primary caretaker and gene cares quite a lot for her. [attr="class","kangaroo"]SIDE QUEST [attr="class","kangaroos2"]locam is home to an extensive system of caves. following these caves down beneath the land's surface and to its core will eventually lead to a lush garden, hidden away from the world. this garden is home to a variety of plants that -- when used in potions -- allowed the consorts to live long lives. sadly, ladon has made this garden his home, and hoards all the plants for his own usage. selfish and full of greed, he scares away or kills anyone who tries to enter. this has shortened the lifespan of the consorts immensely and threatens to drive them to extinction. so, gene's job is to defeat ladon and return the garden to locam's people. |
